Best photo spots in Mallorca for couples
The Tramuntana at last light, Formentor at sunrise, Palma cathedral at any hour: seven Mallorca spots for couples, with the hour and month for each.
The best photo spots in Mallorca for a couple are on the mountain coast, not the beaches: Deià, the Banyalbufar terraces and Port de Sóller in the last two hours of sun, Cap de Formentor at sunrise, and Palma cathedral at any hour at all. Come between April and mid-June or in September and October. In July and August, work only the first and last hour of the day, and keep the turquoise cove for a separate midday session.
Three islands, one of which is for photographs
Mallorca behaves like three places. The Serra de Tramuntana runs the whole north-west coast: fifteen hundred metres of limestone falling into the sea, terraced with olive groves and listed by UNESCO for exactly that. It faces north-west, so its seaward side holds the last light of the day long after the rest of the island has gone flat. The south is flat, dry and edged with the turquoise coves people book the flight for. Palma is a working city with a cathedral standing on the water.
For a couple session, the Tramuntana is where the photographs are, Palma is the easy option that never fails, and the south coves are a midday speciality with rules of their own.
The spots
La Seu and the Parc de la Mar, Palma
A hundred and twenty metres of gothic sandstone over a saltwater pool, facing south across the bay. Because it faces south it is lit all day rather than for one hour, and the pool doubles the whole façade whenever the wind drops. There is no wrong hour, only different ones; the blue half-hour after sunset is the best of them. Free from the park and the sea wall. The interior is ticketed and does not permit shoots.
This is the easiest great location in Spain: no permit, no timing, no queue. If you have one evening and no car, this is the session.
Deià and Cala Deià
Ochre stone stacked on a spur between the mountain and the sea, with a steep track down to a shingle cove. The village faces north-west, so the last hour lands on it front-on and the sea behind goes silver. Work the two hours before sunset. The walk down to the cove takes twenty minutes and the walk back up thirty-five, and parking in the village is severely limited — arrive early or come by taxi.
The Banyalbufar terraces from the Ma-10
Dry-stone terraces running from the coast road down to a two-hundred-metre drop, planted with olives. They face west into the sunset, and the low light picks out every wall on the hillside. This is the UNESCO landscape, it is visible from a layby, and it is public road and marked footpath only: the terraces themselves are working farmland, not a set.
Port de Sóller
A round harbour whose mouth opens to the north-west, towards the summer sunset. The seafront and the lighthouse road above it give you water, boats and the mountain wall in one frame. It is busier than Deià and easier to reach.
Valldemossa
Stone lanes, green shutters and pots on every step, around the Cartoixa. The village fills with day-trippers from mid-morning, so this is a first-hour-of-light location: at eight it is a village, at eleven it is a queue.
Cap de Formentor, the Es Colomer viewpoint
A knife-edge ridge two hundred metres above the sea at the island's northern tip, with cliffs falling away on both sides. The thing to know is the road: from June to September the peninsula is closed to private cars from mid-morning and runs on a shuttle, which makes it, in practice, a sunrise location for four months of the year. Outside those months it also works an hour before sunset.
Caló des Moro
The turquoise cove. The colour is a midday phenomenon — the sun has to be high enough to go into the water rather than bounce off it — which is the opposite of everything else on this page. So a cove session is its own short session between eleven and one, usually here or at Cala Varques, and it is never combined with a portrait session on the same afternoon. In July and August it is full by mid-morning.
The one we would skip: Sa Calobra
Thirteen kilometres of hairpins each way, a narrow gorge mouth the sun reaches for about four hours, and tour coaches in the car park in season. The Torrent de Pareis is spectacular, and it is at its best when the light is at its worst. For a landscape, yes. For a session, rarely.

When to come, and what summer does
April to mid-June and September to October are the months. April is the one to argue for: the Tramuntana is still green, the wildflowers are out, and the island has perhaps a fifth of its August population. The sea is cold and looks it, which matters to nobody standing on a cliff.
July and August are hot, still and completely booked. The Sa Calobra road takes two hours instead of forty minutes, Deià has nowhere to park, and between eleven and eight there is no usable light on any open ground. A summer session is a sunrise session or a last-hour session. The sun sets at about half past nine in late June and rises at about half past six, so that means either an early start or a late dinner — the hour-by-hour guide explains why the Spanish clock makes it so.
November to March the Tramuntana gets real Atlantic weather and the coast road closes for rockfall several times a winter. Palma carries on at 16 degrees, and La Seu works in any weather.
Planning a session, not a road trip
A ninety-minute couple or honeymoon session covers one area on foot: Deià village and the cove, or Port de Sóller and its seafront, or the cathedral and the old town behind it. It does not cover Deià and Formentor, which are well over an hour apart on mountain roads. Pick the area, then the hour.
For a wedding, the question that decides the photographs is the ceremony time. Between June and September, the group portraits and the couple portraits belong in the twenty minutes after sunset, which usually means moving the aperitif — a conversation to have with the venue months ahead, as the booking calendar explains.
