The Atlantic keeps a lid of high cloud over the city for most of the year, which means a soft, even, directionless light from nine in the morning to seven at night, no blown highlights, no closed-up shadows, and no bad hour to be outside. Photographers who work here stop thinking about the time of day within about a month and start thinking about the rain instead. The rain is the sirimiri — a fine, continuous drizzle that is closer to standing inside a cloud than to being rained on. It does not stop a session; it changes what the session looks like, because wet pavement doubles every light in the city and the Guggenheim’s titanium goes from pale grey to something like pewter. When to visit Bilbao for photos?

May, June and September are the driest and the warmest, and the only months with reliable blue sky. Aste Nagusia in the third week of August fills the city completely. October to March is wet — 130 rain days a year, most of them here — but "wet" in Bilbao means grey and drizzling rather than stormy, and the light on those days is the best soft light in Spain. The summer is short, mild and never exceeds about 28 degrees, so nothing in this entry needs an early start.

Museo Guggenheim, desde el puente de La Salve y desde la ría

Titanium does something no other cladding does: it takes the colour of whatever is in the sky and holds none of its own. Under cloud it is cool pewter, at sunset it goes copper for about eight minutes, and after rain the reflecting pool doubles the whole building. Direct midday sun is the one condition it does not survive.

Best time: An overcast afternoon, or the blue half-hour
Permits: Free from outside. Spanish law (LPI art. 35.2) allows photographing a building permanently sited in a public place; the interior does not permit shoots

Casco Viejo: las Siete Calles y el Mercado de la Ribera

Seven medieval streets, narrow and colour-washed, with the market building on the river at the bottom of them. It is a working neighbourhood rather than a preserved one — greengrocers, bars, people carrying shopping — which gives a session something to be part of instead of something to stand in front of.

Mirador de Artxanda

Three minutes up a funicular and the whole city is laid out in its bowl of green hills, with the Guggenheim as a bright spot in the middle of it. The hills behind hold mist after rain, which is the version worth waiting for and happens perhaps one evening in four.

Best time: The hour before sunset, cloud or no cloud
Permits: Funicular about €2.50 return; the viewpoint is free

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

An islet forty minutes north-east, joined to the coast by a stone bridge that zigzags up to a hermitage. It became famous as a television location and is now rationed by timed entry, which has genuinely improved it. On a grey day with an Atlantic swell running it is the most dramatic thing in the north of Spain.

Best time: Sunrise on a weekday, out of season, with the entry slot booked
Permits: Free but capacity-limited with a compulsory advance booking; the 241 steps are the real price

Almost never, and here that is not bravado. In Bilbao a rain forecast usually means several hours of sirimiri, which is soft light, dark wet stone and reflections in every surface — and if you move the date, the new one has a similar forecast. Is the Guggenheim photograph not a cliché by now?

The one from the Puente de la Salve with the building centred, yes, thoroughly. From the river walk on the far bank, low, with the Puppy or the Maman legs framing a person rather than the building — no, and it is the same ten-minute walk. The cliché is a camera position, not a subject.
