Because patience is a finite resource and it is largest at the beginning. A session that saves the group frame for the end gets it from four people who have been standing in the sun for fifty minutes, and it shows in every face. Ten minutes in, everyone is still willing, and the rest of the hour can be spent on the photographs that need the children to forget the camera is there.
The location is chosen for shade and for space to run, in that order. In a Spanish summer that rules out most of what looks best in a photograph between eleven and eight — which is why family sessions here are booked at nine in the morning or at seven in the evening, and why the city pages spend so much time on which places are usable in between.
Forty retouched photographs in a private gallery within 48 to 72 hours: group frames, each child separately, and the ones taken while nobody was looking. Grandparents and extended family are included at no extra charge as long as we know the numbers beforehand.
Frequently asked questions about Family session
Our toddler will not sit still.
Good. A two-year-old sitting still photographs like a hostage. The session is built around them moving, and the group frame is taken in the first ten minutes, while the patience lasts.
Is there a limit on how many of us there are?
Not for one household. Grandparents, an aunt, the cousins staying that week — bring them. Above about a dozen people it becomes a group shoot and needs longer than seventy-five minutes; tell us at booking and we will say which it is.
