A long lens and a public place. We agree the spot, the time and a gesture beforehand — usually something ordinary like taking your jacket off — and from there it is thirty metres and a 135mm. Nobody looks twice at someone photographing a plaza, which is the entire trick and the reason this works far more reliably than hiding behind a pillar.
The location is scouted in advance, and scouted for the hour rather than the view. A proposal at the Mirador de San Nicolás at seven in the evening has four hundred people in it; at eight in the morning it has four. The Templo de Debod, Cala d’Hort, the Parc de la Ciutadella: each of these has a right hour and a wrong one, and the difference between them is whether the photographs have strangers in the background.
Thirty-five retouched photographs, including the moment itself, the reaction and half an hour of couple photographs afterwards, delivered to a private gallery within 24 hours — because the first thing most people want to do is send them to their families.
If she says no, there are no photographs and there is no invoice beyond the deposit. It has happened once.
