The Gothic Quarter at half past nine has a walking tour every forty metres, and by eleven the Carrer del Bisbe bridge — the frame everybody comes for — is a queue. At seven in the morning the same streets have a delivery van and a man washing a doorway, and the light is coming down into them in a band rather than overhead. There is no version of this session at midday that is worth what it costs; there is an excellent version at dawn, and almost nobody books it.
The route runs seawards: the old town while it is still in shade, then the Born, then out to Bogatell or the Barceloneta as the sun comes up out of the Mediterranean and lights the front of everything. Reversing it does not work, because by the time you reach the sand the light on it is flat and behind you. Ninety minutes on foot, no car, three distinct backdrops.
On Park Güell and the Sagrada Família, the honest answer: the monumental zone of Park Güell prohibits professional and commercial shoots outright, and the basilica interior does not permit organised sessions. The free zone above Park Güell is Gaudí’s actual park, it is empty at seven, and the Plaça de Gaudí is where the whole basilica fits in one frame with its reflection. Frequently asked questions about Barcelona photoshoot
Can we shoot at Park Güell or the Sagrada Família?
At Park Güell, in the free zone, yes; the monumental area needs a ticket and forbids commercial work, and a photographer with a tripod counts as commercial. The Sagrada Família is photographed from outside, from Plaça de Gaudí, and it is better at seven than at any hour money can buy.
Seven in the morning — is that really necessary?
For the Gothic Quarter, yes. It is the only hour those streets are empty, and an empty alley in raking light is the photograph; the same alley at noon is a queue. The seafront half of the session runs after it, when the light has come up.
