Holiday session · Barcelona
“It was a very relaxed, very enjoyable session. At first we did not really know how to pose, but the photographer guided us the whole way through. The photographs look natural and elegant, exactly what we were after.”

A dish photographed on a white sweep under a studio light looks like a product, and a product is not what a restaurant sells. What it sells is a room at a particular hour with particular light in it, so the photography is done in that room, at that hour, on the actual tables, with the actual glassware. It means working around the window rather than against it, and it means starting at ten in the morning and finishing before service.
Each plate gets three frames rather than one, because a menu, a website and a delivery app all want different things from the same dish. A dish frame from above for the listing, a detail at plate level for the site, and a wider one with hands and a table for social — which is the only one of the three that has ever made anybody hungry.
Half a day before opening, 40 retouched photographs delivered within seven days, cropped for the website and for the delivery apps, which have their own aspect ratios and will crop badly if nobody does it deliberately. Menu redesigns and multi-site groups are quoted separately.
Frequently asked questions about Food photography
Do you shoot during service?
No. Half a day, before opening, in the restaurant's own light. Shooting during service means either a kitchen under pressure or plates that waited, and both are visible in the photograph.
Do we need a food stylist?
No. The kitchen plates each dish as it goes to a guest, which is the honest version and the one a customer will recognise when it arrives at the table.
What crops do we get?
Forty photographs, each delivered cropped for your own site and for the delivery apps, which want a square and will crop it badly themselves if you do not.
