In July and August the road to Cala Comte is a queue from seven in the evening and a hundred people are standing where the photograph is; the same cove on a Tuesday in late May, or in the third week of September, is empty. In peak weeks we use the smaller west-coast coves — Cala Escondida, Punta Galera — where the same sun goes into the same sea with twenty people instead of four hundred, or we move to a Dalt Vila sunrise, which in August is the best session on offer.
The hour matters more than the location. For Cala d’Hort y Es Vedrà, the window to aim for is the hour before sunset. The session runs 90 min and is built around that window rather than around your diary — it is the one variable that genuinely changes the photographs, and it costs nothing.
What does the session in Ibiza look like?
The typical route runs 90 min and stays on foot. We start at Cala d’Hort y Es Vedrà and move on to Dalt Vila, desde el Portal de ses Taules a la catedral. Two locations rather than one give you two distinct backdrops without getting into a car, and the walk between them produces the frames made in motion — frequently the truest of the set.
